That to me in which that Sarah Palin that which has that officially lost her mind. That.

Sarah Palin has officially come out and said that she supports and wants to “take action against” gay marriage stating that she’s FOR a constitutional ban on gay marriage.

You can watch her response to the question yourself here or read a follow up article here that includes the entire transcript of her answer. You’ll need the transcript since, once again, she has trouble using her big girl words and falls all over herself trying to get the point across.

And in case you have a lazy finger here is a repost of her answer:

“I am, in my own, state, I have voted along with the vast majority of Alaskans who had the opportunity to vote to amend our Constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman. I wish on a federal level that that’s where we would go because I don’t support gay marriage,” Palin said.

“I’m not going to be out there judging individuals, sitting in a seat of judgment telling what they can and can’t do, should and should not do, but I certainly can express my own opinion here and take actions that I believe would be best for traditional marriage and that’s casting my votes and speaking up for traditional marriage that, that instrument that it’s the foundation of our society is that strong family and that’s based on that traditional definition of marriage, so I do support that.”

I guess I’ll start at the beginning as her first stumble happens when she states:

I’m not going to be out there judging individuals, sitting in a seat of judgment telling what they can and can’t do, should and should not do

Then, without even taking a breath follows it up with:

but I certainly can express my own opinion here and take actions that I believe would be best for traditional marriage and that’s casting my votes and speaking up for traditional marriage that

Okay? I’m left walking away wondering what the hell exactly it is she’s saying here. She’s not going to judge The Gays from her awesome Seat of Judgment™ (probably upholstered in moose hide with a fabulous wolf blanket draped elegantly across the back) but she is going to tell us her opinion (the one where she judges) and if give the chance would vote to rip The Rights Rug™ right out from under people who (in her judgment) don’t deserve the rights GIVEN TO US IN THE SAME DAMN CONSTITUTION SHE’S TRYING TO CHANGE.

The rest of it is just… well, this… errr, that:

that, that instrument that it’s the foundation of our society is that strong family and that’s based on that traditional definition of marriage, so I do support that.

Since it’s one big word vomit sentence that should have been summed up in about five words I can only assume that she had previously entered into some kind of contest where you win a big prize, perhaps that Seat of Judgment™, by saying “that” the most times in one sentence.

Seriously now.

Hopefully all of those elusive and much talked about “undecideds” out there are seeing these things and are paying attention. I wish more people were willing to set their feelings of sex aside and see people for, well, exactly that; people. To me this entire subject should be a non-issue because there should be no distinction made between the sexes and love. People love people. There is so much time and effort put into making gay marriage such a negative thing while all around there are heterosexual marriages falling apart. Do you see gay people pointing out how many marriages FAIL? Because chances are, half of you reading this either have had or will have a failed marriage. So if you are one of those 50% then I ask, who the hell are you to judge what SHOULD and SHOULD NOT constitute what a marriage SHOULD be?

Do you think that Sarah Palin has sat down and NOT JUDGED her sister for having a failed marriage? Does Sarah Palin think that her sister has made a mockery of marriage as a whole? Does Sarah Palin think that her sister is going to hell for not serving her husband the way her coveted Bible told her to? I highly doubt it.

I’ve told Ben this before and I honestly believe that in 100 years people are going to look back on this issue and wonder what the hell we were thinking. The same way we look back now and find it hard to believe that at one point women weren’t allowed to vote and that white people owned black people. This issue, people not being allowed to get married, is the same kind of fundamental right that both women and african americans have been afforded and gay people deserve no less.

  1. Shit, everything I hear about her makes me loathe her and loathe her even more. It will scare the living hell out of me and will make me question my faith in humanity if she’s ever in office in such a high place.

  2. What I hate is how people consider her such a role model for women. Every time I hear someone say that I want to go crazy.

  3. Palin For President of the Universe in ’08 (got my vote!)

…NoRly! She does! She’s THAT good. I think she carries with her the beliefs and values of the American people, ..along with an amazing intellect that puts Professor Xavier to shame! Go Palin! Yay! Wahoooooooo! Will someone please just recognize this with me? I mean…‘come onnnn

Oh wait, I was thinking of Tina Fey… Nevermind.

  4. That is just wrong that they just don’t check these peoples levels of sanity or that thing called lackthereof because surely this woman can’t not have all of that marbles in that one jar that sits over there in that cor…

    Wow.
These people who are voting in that there direction, are they too delusional?

  5. A-freakin’-men.

I’m divorced and whenever I get into a gay rights conversation, I always bring it up. Am I not a bigger danger to *traditional* marriage than The Gays as a whole? I had a traditional marriage. I made a mockery of it. I failed. I threw it away like it was nothing. Judge me. Propose an amendment against me, okay? You want to make sure that marriage stays *traditional*, as defined by your religion, then start by outlawing divorce. Then I’ll know you’re serious.

  6. My friends, isn’t hypocrisy awesome? Now my friends, we need to treat this election as what it is, an important event and an exercise in LOL.

My friends, I feel bad for Joe the Plumber.

  7. Be tolerant, even of morons and other assorted idiots. Take heart in the fact that Hot Pants Sarah is dragging her party down. Want to see? Go to http://www.dailykos.com/trendlines and notice the graph titled “Candidate Net Favorable/Unfavorable Ratings”. See how Sarah’s fall from grace is dragging her running mates along with it? I only pray that the media is able to get more interviews with her between now and election day…

  8. Know what I like about Sarah Palin? She’s conservative, and she doesn’t approach her politics in a roundabout way to make it sound better. She doesn’t support gay marriage, so she says so. She hates abortion, so she says so. It makes it WAY easier for us to choose. It might not be fair to say, but in the case of most conservatives, I feel like they know they’re treading in difficult territory so they step lightly. She’s dunking herself all the way in. Maybe that’s a sign of stupidity, but at least she’s blatant about it. lol.

    GObama!

  9. Mmm. I want me some moose hide.

    Go Obama!

I’d put up a sign in our yard and a sticker on my car, but I’m afraid of getting jumped by the redneck Conservatives that live around here. :/ Oh well, I’ll just vote instead and sit back all smug if (when? Dare I say WHEN?) Obama gets elected. 😀

  10. And now a point of view from the other side. I do not take these comments as dim witted nor do I take them as judgemental. When I read this I think of the VP debate in which Palin and Biden agreed on this matter across the board. What I think she is trying to say is that this subject is not something for a court to decide. It is not something to be judged. However if it was something to be judged, she would not agree with saying that marriage is something that can occur with same sex partners. As for her excessive use of verbal diarrhea, I don’t think this is something to snipe at until you have transcripted a conversation that you have had, and pay attention to all the mistakes that you make. OR you could try thinking about the fact that a country is going to transcript and pick apart what you are saying while you are trying to say it and then see how many mistakes you will make. It is starting to seem like liberals are taking up the age old GOP tactic of being an elitist. Ralphie Wiggum in 08!!!!!!

  11. The thing is, I didn’t put myself out there in a position to be judged. A lot of politicians manage to verbally fall all over themselves SOMETIMES, but not ALL THE TIME. Bush might pronounce half the words wrong but at least he manages to get the point across. Shoot, the GOP will hardly let the women away from her handlers long enough to give an interview because they KNOW this is a problem. And it’s not just liberals saying this. People from her own party have spoken out, loudly, about the fact that she was a ridiculous choice. Imagine her having a bout of that bullshit spewing as she’s sitting with some important head of state she can’t remember the name of.

As for the gay rights matter, yes Biden agrees and that is really unfortunate. As does Obama which sucks even more, BUT neither one of them have mentioned (at least as far as I know) that they think the FEDERAL constitution should be changed to ban gay marriage. From what I’ve seen, read and heard, they both agree that it should be a STATE matter, as it should.

To me, her want to dictate OUR rights based on HER belief system is scarry and dangerous. Take away the right to an abortion EVEN IF IT MEANS I WILL DIE, take away the right for two people who love each other to get married, shit why not just go the extra mile and force us all to become Christian! Apparently she missed history class the day they were taught about America and it’s core foundation (SEE: The Constitution).

Palin became an easy target for the Elite Liberal Left because she was a horrible choice for the VP candidate. There were certainly far more experienced, qualified and WELL SPOKEN candidates that could have been chosen leaving us with far less ammunition to shoot back at her.

  12. Quick post…..I would love to continue this conversation with you, but I don’t want to crowd your blog with a back and forth. So, If you ever see me online I would love to debate the differences with you and would be completely open to you posting that conversation to anyone. I just don’t want to overstep my bounds and make you feel like I am attacking you on your own blog. That would just be rude.

  13. heheh I allow a Select Few People Who Don’t Suck™ to say whatever they want here and LUCKY FOR YOU, you’re one of them! 😉 I know that we have differing opinions (example: abortion) and if you want to express them feel free to! I know that you’d never do it in an attacking kinda way. I or other readers might learn from what you have to say by hearing a different opinion which is never a bad thing.

I don’t get on to IM a lot anymore because when I sit down to get online I have so many other things I’m trying to work on and if I have it on I always seem to get sidetracked. It’s the blond. 😉 BUT! If I see you on I’ll hit ya up.

  14. I am not sure how she got into the position that she’s in. When she was first introduced as the Republican VP hopeful I was certain that it was an all an act and that she would eventually drop the hillbilly / soccer mom hybrid and become a figure who I could at least listen to without laughing. But alas that hasn’t happened; this is who she really is. I can’t even chalk up her personality to her experiences in the barren waste land known as Alaska. Since I know quite a few Inuit who are intellectual, and articulate, in short nothing like her.

Fingers crossed that she doesn’t become the next VP of the US and heaven help you if she does.

  15. Oh sweet Jesus I hadn’t even thought of that but of course, if McCain wins then she’s vice president! From what I gather McCain picked her because he wanted to take the path less traveled, so to speak. She was a bold choice, but it was really working for the GOP at first. Until it turned out, as Meli said, that there really is nothing more to her than just the hillbilly facade.

So plz America, vote for Obama if for no other reason than I won’t have to watch her be plastered all over CNN every morning for the next 4 years…

  16. I disagree with Palin on taking the ban on gay marriage to the federal level. With most things, as a conservative, I believe it is a state’s decision. HOWEVER — what good is it when the state’s population can vote to define marriage as a man and a woman (California in 2000) when a minority (4 judges) can overturn it? I respect the judge that said she PERSONALLY believes in the right for gay couples to marry but the PEOPLE OF THE STATE OPPOSED IT, so she voted to keep it.

Governor Palin does not have anything personal against gay people, she vetoed legislation that would have taken away the state benefits from domestic partners. Like Barak Obama, Joe Biden, John Kerry and many of the Democratic royalty, they believe the definition of marriage is between a man and a woman.

Joe Biden in the 2008 VP debate:
No. Barack Obama nor I support redefining from a civil side what constitutes marriage. We do not support that. That is basically the decision to be able to be able to be left to faiths and people who practice their faiths the determination what you call it.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ofq-N-8WAjY

Biden has his own gaffes, but no one seems to care. Like taxes are your patriotic duty? “Mark my word” due to Obama’s inexperience he’s going to be “tested” by major threatening countries like Russia, Iran, etc? His choice may not be popular at first?! Obama says we’ll invade Pakistan to kill Osama, even against Pakistan’s will? Even BUSH wouldn’t say THAT outloud. I’m sure we’ve heard enough about the bit on Iran and no preconditions.

McCain has been a bit more centered than I like, but if anyone wants a moderate that works both sides of the aisle, he is truly that person. I’m shocked he won the Republican ticket. However, he has — for a politician — been transparent and true to his stance on almost everything he has ever said.

Obama on the otherhand is still a mystery, as would be Palin if McCain were to die in office (which if he’s like his mother, wouldn’t happen). He’s a greater speaker, and he has some nice sounding ideas, but in application I think they are morally wrong and will impact a greater reach than he is initially stating. If he wins in 11 days, his first term will be the longest job he’s ever held if you don’t count the past 2 years he’s been running for president as a senator.

Just some thoughts from my side 🙂

  17. OMG I HATE YOU DON’T EVERY COME BACK HERE!

    Teehee.

I actually plan to respond but we have stuffs to go do. I just wanted to make sure that any regular reader understand that Eu is, like, one of my most favorite people in the whole world and I still love her to death even though she’s on The Dark Side and that attacking her for her opinion won’t fly.

Only I’m allowed to do that.

Flash backs to BSR/Bakersfield BS political debate just flew through my head. 😉

  18. Yikes! This is another reason why I am thankful to be Canadian. I am really hoping that Obama gets elected, I think he can do good things as being Canada’s neighbour. He might even encourage our Prime Minister to get off his high horse with military issues and create a good relationship between each country.

I don’t see why gay marriage is even an issue. I thought the year was 2008. We are people, we all bleed the same blood. Last time I checked those who are gay do not have rainbow blood, or an extra limb. Even those who are born with birth defects are treated kinder than someone who is gay in many states from what I have read …. Love is Love, why stop someone from expressing their love by being allowed to Marry someone of the same sex? If the high and might Christians are uptight about the traditions of marriage, perhaps they really need to question who they are. I’m sure many of them are closest gays, or in denial that someone close that they love is actually gay.

  19. I’m not really up-to-date on the happenings of America, but from what I understand, a lot of people don’t really fancy Sarah Palin, yes? But since I don’t know the case (and I sorta agree with some of her views), I’ll shut up and say…

Finland is very Obama-positive, so I’m hoping he wins.

  20. Thought this was interesting, last night, Cassidy (10 years old) says to Anna and I, … after having watching a commercial about Gay Marriage proposition… (this is how she was learning about marriage between gay people, … from the $@#^ing commecials on TV!!!! …not in school! as the ads in California would have you believe) looks to Anna and I who were playing world of Warcraft, and says to us “Marriage? between two gays? That just makes me shiver…”

I immediately stopped what i was doing… Anna turned down the volume on the TV, and I think she paused whatever was on TV.

(Ben)”So, What makes you shiver when you think of it?”
    (Cassidy)”I don’t know, it..just does… I mean.. I don’t know a lot about it, but… (shiver)….”

(We teach her rights for all, so I have an idea of where this might have come from)

(Ben)”So, Cassidy, This election includes a vote on if people in this state, in California, will have the right to marry, if they are Gay….Would you take that right away from yourself? Is it something that you think only certainly people are qualified to have? One way to think about it is… If you are willing to take the rights away from another group, you damned well better be willing to take them away from you (the group that includes you).”

I went over this in detail with her, since I really wanted her to understand how serious this was. I didn’t touch on the differences between what a Gay couple do in private, and what a heterosexual couple do in private, as honestly, that really has nothing to do with this/that discussion. Not providing rights to marry to a group based on their sexual preference, is an idea, that is, as Anna and I both agree on, as old and antiquated as not providing equal rights to people based on the color of their skin, or their sex. I say, if we can’t afford gay folks the right to marry, women shouldn’t be able to vote anymore, and black folks shouldn’t have rights anymore, I mean.. if we’re going to be as idiotic as that, we might as well roll it all back. There’s no reason to pick and choose how narrow-minded we are, we might as well just be even-handedly narrow-minded.

I am not gay. I am not Black. I am not a woman, but I believe in equal rights for all of those groups… why? Because it’s the right thing to do. There will indeed come a time when we will look back, and wonder…WTF were we (some of us) thinking… I mean, everyone deserves equal treatment under the law, …not just some of us. We can’t exclude marriage (because a few folks don’t want it to).

Simple rule here, … live your life so you can be happy, and that your happiness doesn’t remove the happiness of others. Proposition 8 Removes the happiness of others.

This is why I am fundamentally opposed to Palin and her campaign (not because of her wardrome dollars, or the way she speaks, or any of those other ideas). And, the idea that she could end up leading the country is never something I could support.

  21. Ben I got to completely agree with you on the Commercials. Between that and people calling my house, I am about to go nuts. I am not against a civil union between two people, but I do have a question. I have two friends that are brothers. They live together in a house that the purchased together. One works for himself and one works for a major company. The one that works for a major company allows benefits for a civil union. It will not however allow benefits for his brother. Now it takes both of their salaries to make the household work, and by all rights one’s income affects the others. So if you are going to allow Gay marrige should you also make it a law that two people in this situation should have benefits. That is what this should actually boil down to. The idea of marrige is something that is given power by the feelings that you have for it and not by the state or nation that governs you. Too many people have forgotten the supposed seperation between church and state. Oh and just for the record that last thought came from me, a straight white southern christian male that is also a card carrying member of the NRA. Odd.

  22. Heya Tree,
Well, I’m not focussing speficially on allocation of benfits as a focus of what is and isn’t right. I know that letting those folks get married, because they want to, and are ready to pledge their everlasting love in holy matrimony doesn’t mean any less than when a man and a woman do it.

I’ve seen too many folks throw it away when it IS a man and a woman. SHould a man and a woman never be allowed to get married again to anyone if they can’t stay together forever? Just food for thought.

    btw, totally agree:
“The idea of marriage is something that is given power by the feelings that you have for it and not by the state or nation that governs you. Too many people have forgotten there is supposed to be separation between church and state.”

Along those lines, Marriage should be about a commitment between two people, and about Love, about wanting to share the rest of your life together. ANd if two people want to do that, and they’re gay? Who I am to stop them? Am I here to judge them? to stop them? Because I have a better sense of marriage then them? Because I know what’s right for them? more than THEY do?

…No. They know what’s best for them. They don’t need me to govern them.

As far as benefits Tree, EVERYONE should have benefits, not just married folks. The question of benefits for the self-employed is a question that plagues anyone who is self-employed. That person, even when self-employed, shoudl have access to all the benefits they need. That they don’t have them or pay massive premiums to get them, is the fault of a poorly implemented government and health care system (in my opinion)

  23. Ben said: Simple rule here, … live your life so you can be happy, and that your happiness doesn’t remove the happiness of others. Proposition 8 Removes the happiness of others.

This is why I am fundamentally opposed to Palin and her campaign (not because of her wardrome dollars, or the way she speaks, or any of those other ideas). And, the idea that she could end up leading the country is never something I could support.

The primary point in my post was to highlight Biden’s direct quote that he & his running mate do not believe the government (civil) should redefine marriage, that is, traditional marriage as it was recognized in 50 states up until 4 years ago 49 and now 48.

So if that is the fundamental reason you dislike Palin, how does that affect your feelings towards the others running for office?

As a sidenote, California already had a law on the books that provided registered domestic partners the same benefits as married couples, California Family Code 297

  24. I can’t in good conscience allow msyelf to believe that the reason, the soul reason, anyone, heterosexual, homosexual, whatever your sexual preference, is… is to have benefits… if it is, then you shouldn’t get married, and that goes for everyone. Marriage should be about Committing your love, your life, to the other person, to ‘support them, care for them, love them, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, til death do you part”. …..

…..unless you’re gay? then, …nevermind? you don’t deserve to have that right.

Its’ not jsut about benefits. It’s about being able being about to legally get married, to be able to truly have an official wedding with the 100% equal recognition that a heterosexual couple gets, … and share the rest of your life together regardless of sexual orientation, color of your six, etc…..not just benefits.

Julie, my comments about happiness specifically had to do with removing the rights of others.

  25. From time to time, it’s a good idea to go back and read why we’re all here, and not in England.

“…that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

I didn’t see any asterisks in there for Gay people.

Btw, Anna and I were discussing an interesting point on the way to work this morning:

For Biden and also separately for Obama:
“Are they saying they DON’T believe in support of Gay Marriage on a federal level because they really don’t? or because it’s what they have to say to get elected?”

Meaning, is it the belief of the general populous that to run for president, you can’t support gay marriage? Or do they truly believe it is a state level issue, and it should stay that way?

    (Anyway, just food for thought)

  26. My opinion is that marriage is not about BENEFITS. If that were the case, I’d have married Ben as soon as I moved to San Jose four years ago because it would have saved us a small fortune in medical expenses had I been covered by his insurance. We did end up eventually using the “domestic partnership” insurance through his employer, an insurance that was originally established to “give equal rights” to gay couples, however it was more expensive than if we had been “married”. How is that equal?

As for Palin’s stance on civil unions, it’s hard for me to find anywhere where she’s either supported or not supported the issue since she’s started her run as VP. I did hear about her stance on the subject when she was running for governor of Alaska in 2006 when she admitted that she’d support a state ballot denying homosexual couples getting the same benefits as married heterosexual couples (source).

Elected officials can’t defy the court when it comes to how rights are applied, she said, but she would support a ballot question that would deny benefits to homosexual couples.

“I believe that honoring the family structure is that important,” Palin said.

Most conservatives are of the opinion that “marriage” is a religious term, defined by the bible, and therefore you can only be “married” by a religious official in a church. But! Ben and I were married by a judge, in an office, in a ceremony completely void of any religious reference. So, how come the conservatives aren’t all up in arms over the fact that Ben and I are “married”? The only conclusion I can come up with is that we aren’t gay. So to me, what it all boils down to in the end is that it’s blatant discrimination and, like Tree said, a gross overstep of the state/church separation.

It does bother me that Obama/Biden don’t fully support gay marriage but at least they support federally recognized civil unions which I think is a step in the right direction and neither of them support something as outlandish as changing the federal constitution which is what originally shocked me to hear about Palin.

That combined with her stance that ALL abortion should be illegal is what sent me over the Palin Hatin’ edge. Late term abortion as birth control (or ANY abortion as birth control, in my opinion) is wrong BUT, at least in terms of non-late term abortions, should be the choice of the woman. Denying a minor from aborting a pregnancy caused by insest or rape is just a horrible thought to me and stepping way over the line of what should be a personal right.

I know these are things that we don’t tend to agree on, Eu, but I get scared when I see somebody who thinks so nonchalantly about taking away what I think are basic rights we all deserve.
